Choosing an SEO agency is harder than it should be. Most proposals promise more traffic and higher rankings, the reports look impressive, and it’s difficult to tell a good agency from an average one until months — and a fair amount of budget — have gone by.

The questions below will help you separate agencies that can grow your business from those that will simply keep you busy. They apply whether you’re hiring an SEO agency in Delhi or anywhere else in India — and they’re the same questions we’d want any business to ask us.

Key takeaways

  • Look for an agency that talks about leads and revenue, not just rankings.
  • Ask how they’ll research your market before recommending anything.
  • Be wary of guaranteed rankings, secret methods and very cheap link building.
  • Make sure you’ll own your accounts, content and data.
  • Agree on how success will be measured before you sign.

Before you start: know what you want from SEO

An agency can only aim at a target you’ve defined. Before you speak to anyone, write down what a successful year would look like — more calls, more form enquiries, more bookings, or more sales of a particular service or in a particular area. Rough numbers are fine. They give you a way to judge every proposal you receive.

10 questions to ask an SEO agency

1. How will you measure success?

This is the most revealing question. If the answer is only about rankings, traffic or “visibility”, be careful. Those are useful indicators, but they aren’t the goal. A good agency will talk about qualified leads — calls, forms and bookings — and explain exactly how they’ll track them.

2. What will you do in the first 90 days?

You should get a clear, specific answer: research, tracking setup, a technical audit, priority fixes, and the first pages or content they’ll work on. Vague answers such as “on-page and off-page optimisation” tell you very little.

3. How will you research my market?

Good SEO starts with understanding your customers, your competitors and the searches that lead to sales. Ask how they’ll choose keywords, and whether they prioritise search volume or commercial intent. A search with a few hundred monthly visits from ready-to-buy customers is often worth more than one with thousands of casual researchers.

4. Can you show me relevant work — and explain it?

Case studies are helpful, but the explanation matters more than the headline number. Ask what the starting point was, what they changed, how long it took, and what it meant for the client’s enquiries. A newer agency may not have many case studies yet; in that case, ask about the experience of the people who’ll actually work on your account.

5. Who will work on my account?

The person who sells you SEO isn’t always the person who does it. Ask who will plan your strategy, who will carry out the work, and how often you’ll speak to them.

6. How do you build links?

Links still matter, but how they’re earned matters more. Ask for examples of the kinds of websites they typically earn links from. Be cautious of large numbers of links for a low monthly fee, private blog networks, or anything they won’t explain. Poor-quality links can do lasting damage.

7. Do you guarantee rankings?

No one can guarantee rankings, because no one controls Google’s algorithm. An agency that promises “page one in 30 days” is either overselling or using tactics that carry real risk. What you can expect is a clear plan, transparent work and honest reporting.

8. How will you report to me?

Ask to see a sample report. It should show what was done, what changed and what it meant for the business — not just pages of charts. You should also know how often you’ll review progress together, and what happens when something isn’t working.

9. Who owns the accounts, content and data?

Your website, Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Business Profile and any content created for you should belong to you. Make sure you’ll keep full access if you ever stop working together.

10. What are the contract terms?

Understand the minimum term, the notice period and exactly what’s included each month. SEO takes time, so a sensible initial commitment is reasonable — but you should know what you’re agreeing to, and what happens if expectations aren’t met.

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed rankings, or promises of “page one in weeks”.
  • Secret or “proprietary” methods they won’t explain.
  • Very cheap packages that include large numbers of backlinks.
  • Reports that focus only on rankings and traffic.
  • No questions about your business, customers or goals.
  • Reluctance to give you access to your own accounts.

What a good first conversation looks like

A good agency will spend most of the first call asking about your business: what you sell, who your best customers are, where enquiries come from today, and what you’ve tried before. They should also be willing to tell you if SEO isn’t the right channel for your goals right now — and explain why.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to hire an SEO agency in India?

It varies widely with the scope of work, the competition in your market and the size of your website. Rather than comparing monthly fees alone, compare what’s included, who does the work and how results will be measured.

How long should I give an SEO agency before judging results?

Early movement usually shows within three to four months; meaningful growth in enquiries typically takes six to twelve. Agree on what should be done in the first 90 days, so you can judge progress well before then.

Should I choose a local SEO agency?

Not necessarily. What matters is whether the agency understands your market. If you depend on nearby customers, an agency that knows local search in your area — Delhi NCR, for example — can help, but strategy calls and reporting work just as well remotely.

The bottom line

The right SEO agency treats your budget as an investment in business growth, not a monthly retainer to justify with charts. Ask the questions above, listen carefully to the answers, and choose the partner that speaks most clearly about your customers and your results.
